Colorado and Northwestern Railway

Owner: Jim Eaman

The Colorado and Northwestern Railway (C&N) was built to serve the mines, mills and people of western Boulder County. The C&N was nicknamed the “The Switzerland Trail of America” and had sharp curves, steep grades and lots of history which make it an ideal prototype to model. I’m attempting to recreate the C&N in its entirety as it existed in 1908 with the intention to model most every station, all major features, every locomotive, every piece of rolling stock and every passenger car. The Sn3 layout is located in two rooms encompassing roughly 1000 sq. ft with 75% of track and benchwork complete and 25% scenicked. Prototypical operation is planned.

Penn Central Northfield Subdivision, Large Scale 1:29

Owner: Gene Fusco

This outdoor railroad that is 170” x 280”, represents a fictitious connection between Buffalo, NY and Pittsburgh, PA.  Locomotives are all “Dead Rail” with internal battery-power and radio control throttles. Locomotives and rolling stock are all modeled to closely match Penn Central practices during the 1968-1976 era. Car forwarding is done using JMRI Operation Pro generated switch lists.  Operations use Track Warrant Control with a Dispatcher on FRS radio. The operating sessions consist of numerous through and local freight trains along with commuter and long-distance passenger service. The track is 100% complete with scenery and structures 10% complete. The indoor staging area is accessed through garage door.

Denver and Salt Lake Rail Road- ca. September 1917

Owner: Steve Chmielowiec

This 30’ x 50’ HO Scale layout depicts the punishing 4% grade crossing of the Continental Divide over Rollins Pass and the helper district operations between Tolland and Tabernash prior to the boring of the Moffat Tunnel.  Also included is an extensive “active” staging/industrial switching area designed to support the operations on the scenicked portions of the layout.  This area connects the eastern and western ends of the layout.  One side represents Denver area destinations and the other side represents the Western Slope industries.  A large double ended storage yard connects the two sides of the staging area, allowing proper direction for open top loads and empties.  Pre-staged trains are also an option.  Time Table and Train Order operations are planned.

French Broad River Valley in N Scale

Owner: John Deery

The layout is 18′ x 24′ around the wall walk-in plan. Electrical and track work are done with    scenery at 80% done in a finished basement. The layout represents 12 miles of the Southern Railway mainline south of Asheville, NC, running from Biltmore to Fletcher, NC.  The timeframe is the early 1950’s (both steam and diesel). The railroad has about 390′ of track with several areas or towns for industrial switching   There are both freight and passenger operations with an emphasis on local freight switching.  The layout uses “Tab on Car” for car forwarding. The layout is handles up to 6 operating crews running trains at one time. The track is Kato UniTrack.  It works very well and looks good after you paint the rails, add the ballast, and a dirty wash. The buildings are old ones from my collection.  Train control is an NCE DCC Power Pro and a dedicated WiFi with JMRI.  The layout can be controlled with cellphones and an app (WiThrottle for iOS and Train Driver for Android).

South Pennsylvania Railroad

Owner: Bill Kepner

This N scale layout is 24′ x 24′ with 80% of the electrical work completed, 90% of the track completed, and 90% of the scenery completed. The layout has been created around the walls with peninsulas and a staging yard room.  Mostly single level with some 2nd deck.  It represents a freelance line that connects Harrisburg, PA to the Pittsburgh area.

The Old Home Road

Owner: Stan Woodcock

The theme of the layout is a tribute to my family heritage. The layout is different scenes about my family including the ranch where my Dad grew up, a sawmill that my Grandfather operated, the coal mine where my Grandfather worked and my Dad loaded coal trains, the church I grew up in, and the small school house my parents attended. The operating railroad is the Denver and Rio Grande where my Dad was an engineer for many years. The layout is 95%+ complete as a layout is never really completed. The electrical, track and scenery are operational.

America Coast to Coast

Owner: Dan and Nancy Masimer

Our model train started after our grandson got an HO scale for Christmas last year.  That set us wanting a layout of our own in motion.  Dan had a Lionel O27 train as a child, which we still have, but after looking at it and the condition it was in and the space needed to set it up, we decided to start over with HO-Scale.   It is 11×17’and is 80% complete.

The layout does not depict any particular railroad.  We call it ” Our land is your land.  From California to the New York island!”  Literally, it has a California orange grove, on to the Colorado mountains, a midwest farm and passes by Manhattan Island.  It was “born” in February of this year from structures from the railroad museum’s warehouse as well as cars, some buildings and bridges.  The goal was not to spend a lot of money, but to make something nice out of what we could find.

Friday Night Open House Layout

Appalachian and Ohio Railroad

Owner: David Stewart

2-rail O Scale with all track/switches hand-laid filling a 3,000 sq’ space. The layout is complete, minus about half of the finished scenery. I’m slowly gettin’ there.

See www.aorailroad.com for way too much data.

This layout is the 2nd iteration of the Proto-freelanced A&O in O Scale. Construction began in 2008 with an amazing group of fellow modelers. 20 operators make A&O 2.0 run well. Set in SE Ohio and western WV in 1968 (happy hippy-time), the A&O is both a heavy bridge route and a full-fledged coal hauler. It’s 2 railroads on top of each other. Long grades require pushers.

Unique features include: Operating coal/flood loaders (live loads); a working coal rotary for barge loading; the totally enclosed and isolated Kayford Coal Branch; a fully functional hump yard with retarders; full signaling and CTC panel; a darkened, rain-drenched town of Linnwood with synchronized lightning.

The A&O has been featured in numerous books and periodicals over the years. If you’re a nice visitor and so desiring, you may even be handed a throttle!
